Our Healthcare

THE LSU VETERINARY TEACHING HOSPITAL SEES OVER 20,000 CASES PER YEAR AND HAS THE MOST
BOARD-CERTIFIED SPECIALISTS UNDER ONE ROOF IN LOUISIANA.
Our commitment to the very best in animal healthcare includes services in anesthesiology,
cardiology, ophthalmology, zoological medicine, oncology, internal medicine, dermatology,
small and large animal surgery, pathology, diagnostic imaging, integrative medicine,
physical rehabilitation, ambulatory care, shelter medicine, and community practice.
We work closely with referring veterinary practitioners to provide advanced treatment,
diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and consultation. Our team strives to provide
leading- edge and compassionate care for animals while providing excellent and timely
customer service to our referral partners.
As part of our commitment to Louisiana, we are a leader in disaster response, training,
and preparedness as it relates to animals. We have rescued thousands of animals affected
by hurricanes, floods and accidents.
THE OPENING OF STEPHENSON PET CLINIC STARTS A NEW CHAPTER IN OUR STORY.
A new 40,000+ sq. ft. healthcare facility built in 2022, the clinic is home to many
of our outpatient services and expands our teaching spaces.

With 3,400 DVM graduates in our history, 64% of veterinarians licensed to practice
in Louisiana were trained at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, and our practice-ready
veterinarians are sought after regionally, nationally, and globally. Our research
training programs are designed to provide opportunities to highly qualified and strongly
motivated students to pursue academic and research careers that fuel scientific discovery
around the world.

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences provides graduate professional training
to interns and residents through the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Recruitment and
selection for this program are through the Veterinary Intern and Resident Matching
Program (VIRMP).
The Department of Pathobiological Sciences provides residency training in morphological
(diagnostic) and clinical pathology and also laboratory animal medicine through the
Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
Externships provide opportunities for veterinary students to get clinical experience
outside of their respective veterinary schools.
Veterinary clinics and hospitals may offer externships for veterinary students to
gain valuable experience; these externships must be approved for LSU veterinary students
