Modern Networking: LinkedIn 101
February 05, 2026
So, you’ve stepped into the professional world and you’re trying to get your name out there. With so many different platforms to choose from, it can feel overwhelming to pick the right one. LinkedIn is the perfect place to show off your career goals, experiences, and success. If you’re unfamiliar with the platform, you’ve come to the right place.
The Basics
1) After you create your account, upload a professional headshot.
Don’t have one? Check out our DIY headshot guide to learn how to take a great photo using what you already have.
2) Fill out every section and leave nothing blank if you can help it.
Helpful places to start: website link, about section, contact info, work experience.
3) Follow people in your field and interact with their posts.
Don’t fret – all of the people you look up to had to start somewhere.
4) Make your first post.
Try to shake off the first-post anxiety and just do it. Don’t overthink it.
Leveraging LinkedIn
Now that we have the basics out the way, let’s take things up a notch. How can you use LinkedIn to your best advantage?
1) Use LinkedIn as an online resume and portfolio:
When posting on LinkedIn, don't shy away from sharing your experiences. Highlight your campus involvement, community service, networking events, conferences, or even class projects you're proud of.
2) Use LinkedIn as a networking platform:
LinkedIn isn't just about posting – it's also about connecting with others (networking!). You don't have to overcomplicate it. If you see someone else's post, simple messages like "Congratulations!," "Keep it up," or "I can't wait to see what you do next," go a long way. Be intentional with who you connect with.
3) Using LinkedIn to help with the job search:
When applying for a job, try to find a recruiter or hiring manager and send them a message. They have a lot of applicants to look at, so messaging them allows them to put a face to a name and taking action may set you apart from other applicants.
Take the Next Step
LinkedIn is more than just another social platform. Show up authentically, stay consistent, and don’t underestimate the power of small interactions over time. Your next opportunity could be one post, one connection, or one message away.
